Selected area screenshot

Screenshot just the part of the page you need

Drag a rectangle over the page and InnoShot captures only what is inside it. Resize or move the selection until it fits, check the size readout, nudge it into place with the arrow keys, then press Enter. The selection can run past the bottom of the window: the page scrolls as you go, and the region is captured in one piece.

Why select first

Skip the capture-then-crop routine

Most of the time you do not need the whole window. You need the error message and the field above it, one pricing card, a chart, or a paragraph to quote. Capturing everything and cropping afterwards works, but it adds a step every time and leaves you guessing where the edges should be.

With a selected area capture you decide the edges before anything is taken. Pull the handles until the selection hugs the content, check its width and height in the readout, and confirm. The editor opens with only that region, ready to annotate or export.

The selection is not tied to the size of your screen. Keep dragging past the edge of the window and the page scrolls with you. When you confirm, InnoShot scrolls through the region and stitches it, the same way it builds a full-page capture. Chrome allows an extension at most two captures per second, so a tall selection takes roughly half a second for each screen it covers.

How to

How to screenshot a selected area in Chrome

  1. 1

    Start an area selection

Press the suggested shortcut Alt+Shift+S (Option+Shift+S on a Mac, Alt+Shift+Q on ChromeOS), click the InnoShot icon and choose the selected area action, or right-click the page and use the InnoShot menu.

  2. 2

    Drag across the region

Press and drag from one corner of what you want to the opposite corner. The readout shows the width and height of the selection as you drag.

  3. 3

    Fine-tune the edges

Drag a side or corner to resize, or drag inside the selection to move it. The arrow keys nudge it 1 pixel at a time, or 10 pixels with Shift held down. Lock the aspect ratio or pick a preset when the image needs a fixed shape.

  4. 4

    Press Enter to capture

Enter takes the capture and Esc cancels. The region opens in the InnoShot editor in a new tab, where you can annotate, style and export it.

Precise selection

Control every edge of the selection

  • Drag, resize and move

Every side and corner has a handle, and dragging inside the selection moves it without changing its size, so a rough first drag is easy to correct. A live readout shows the size as you work.

  • Keyboard nudging

Arrow keys move the selection 1 pixel per press, and holding Shift moves it 10. It is the simplest way to line an edge up exactly with a border, a panel or a button.

  • Aspect lock and presets

Lock the ratio to keep the proportions while you resize, or start from an aspect-ratio preset when the image has to fit a particular shape.

  • Selections taller than the window

Drag, resize or move past the edge of the window and the page scrolls. The whole region is then captured by scrolling and stitching, so a selection is never limited to one screen.

  • Or capture the page and crop

For a section deep inside a long page, a full-page capture cropped in the editor can be easier than dragging. The crop never discards pixels, so you can widen it again later.

Good to know

A few situations work better with a different approach.

Menus and tooltips that close
Hover menus and tooltips usually disappear as soon as you start dragging. Use delayed capture for those, so the menu can be opened before the frame is taken.
Moving content in tall selections
A selection several screens tall is stitched while the page scrolls. Parallax backgrounds and animations that react to scrolling can look different in the result than they did on screen, so check it in the editor.
High-density displays
The image is saved at your display's native resolution, so on a high-density screen it has more pixels than the page uses for layout. Use the scale option when you export if you need a smaller file.
Pages Chrome reserves
Area selection cannot run on chrome:// pages, the Chrome Web Store, the New Tab page or pages that belong to other extensions.
Questions

Selected area screenshot questions

Something else? The full FAQ and the documentation go further.

How do I screenshot part of a page without an extension?

On Windows, press Win+Shift+S to open Snipping Tool and drag a rectangle. On a Mac, press Cmd+Shift+4 and drag. Chrome DevTools also has "Capture area screenshot" in its Command Menu (Ctrl+Shift+P, or Cmd+Shift+P on a Mac). Snipping Tool and the macOS shortcut capture only what is on screen at that moment and cannot scroll the page, and DevTools saves a PNG straight to your Downloads folder with no editing step. InnoShot lets the selection run past the window and opens the result ready to edit.

Can I select an area taller than my screen?

Yes. Drag, resize or move the selection past the edge of the window and the page scrolls so you can keep going. When you press Enter, InnoShot scrolls through the region, captures it screen by screen and joins the pieces into one image. This takes roughly half a second for each screen the selection covers.

How do I line the selection up exactly?

Drag the edges until the readout shows the size you want, then nudge with the arrow keys: each press moves the selection 1 pixel, or 10 pixels with Shift held down. To keep a fixed shape while you resize, lock the aspect ratio or start from a preset.

Should I select an area or crop a full-page capture?

Select an area when you know what you want before you capture: there is less to capture and nothing to trim afterwards. Capture the full page and crop when you are not sure yet, or when the section sits far down a long page. The crop in the InnoShot editor never discards pixels, so you can widen it later, and you can also export just a selected region without changing the crop.

Can I capture an embedded map, video or form?

Usually, yes. Capture works on the pixels you see, so content embedded from another site appears in a selected area capture even though the element picker cannot reach inside it. Copy-protected video can be an exception: some streaming services block their frames from being captured, and they may come out black.
