Project backups

Export InnoShot projects as .innoshot backup files and import them later. Backups stay editable and keep original pixels, so store them with care.

Updated

A project backup is a .innoshot file that holds an editable copy of your work. InnoShot keeps everything in your browser and has no account or cloud storage, so backups are how you keep work safe, move it to another computer, or hand an editable version to a colleague who also uses InnoShot.

What a backup contains

  • The original screenshot pixels, including every part of a long capture.
  • Your edits, still editable: crop, adjustments, annotations, effects, background and frame.

Because the edits stay editable, a backup also keeps what is under your blur, pixelate and redaction layers. Anyone who imports the file can move or remove those layers and see the original content.

Export a backup

  1. Choose the project you want to back up.
  2. Use the option to export it as a project backup.
  3. If the project contains redactions, InnoShot warns you and offers Apply redactions to source. Read the section below before you decide.
  4. Save the .innoshot file somewhere safe.

Import a backup

  1. Use the option to import a project backup.
  2. Select the .innoshot file.
  3. Open the imported project from your history and continue editing.

Treat backups as sensitive

A backup can contain more than the finished image shows. Handle it with the same care as the original page:

  • Store backups in a private location, not a shared folder.
  • Before sending a backup to someone, ask whether they should see everything in the original screenshot, including what you covered.
  • To share a finished result, export a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF instead. Those are flattened, and redactions are burned into them.

Apply redactions to source

When you save a project file that contains redactions, InnoShot warns you and offers Apply redactions to source. This burns the redactions into the stored image:

  • The original pixels under each redaction are replaced, both in the backup you are saving and in the copy stored in your browser.
  • It cannot be undone.
  • Backups you exported earlier are not changed and still contain the original pixels. Delete them if you no longer need them.

Use it when the backup is going to someone else, or when you simply never need the hidden content again.

Good to know

  • Removing the extension deletes its local data, so export backups of anything you want to keep first.
  • Backups are for InnoShot. To share with someone who does not use it, export an image or a PDF.
  • Keep a few recent backups rather than one. If a file is lost or damaged, you still have another copy.
