Storage and retention
InnoShot stores captures locally in your browser's IndexedDB. See storage usage, clear history and set an optional retention rule for old captures.
Updated
InnoShot keeps your captures, projects and history on your computer, inside Chrome. There is no account and nothing is uploaded. This article explains where your data lives, how to see how much space it uses, and how to tidy up.
Where your data lives
Captures and projects are stored in IndexedDB, a database built into Chrome that extension pages can use. InnoShot requests the unlimitedStorage permission, so its storage is not held to the usual quota Chrome applies, and long full-page captures have room. In practice, the free space on your computer is the limit.
The data belongs to the Chrome profile you captured in. Other profiles and other computers do not see it.
Check storage usage
InnoShot shows how much storage it is using, so you can tell when it is time to tidy up. The figure is an estimate reported by Chrome. Long full-page captures usually take the most space.
Free up space
- Delete individual items you no longer need from the history page.
- Clear history to remove your stored history in one go. There is no cloud copy to restore from, so export backups of anything you want to keep first.
Optional retention
Retention is off by default: InnoShot keeps everything until you delete it. If you turn it on, you choose a number of days, and InnoShot can then remove captures that meet all three conditions:
- They are older than the number of days you chose.
- They are not favorites.
- They were never edited.
Edited projects and favorites are never removed by retention. Before anything is deleted, InnoShot shows you what will be removed, and retention runs only after you have turned it on. It never deletes silently.
To protect an unedited capture from retention, mark it as a favorite.
Before you remove the extension
Removing the extension deletes its local data, so export backups first.
- Export a backup of each project you want to keep.
- Export finished images or PDFs you still need.
- Check that the files open, then remove the extension.
If you install InnoShot again later, import your backups to bring the projects back.
Good to know
- Your captures and projects stay on your computer. InnoShot makes no network requests and works offline after it is installed. Small preferences such as the theme are saved with Chrome's extension storage, which Chrome may sync between your own signed-in browsers if Chrome sync is on; captures and projects are never part of that.
- A Chrome profile that is deleted takes InnoShot's data with it, just like removing the extension.
- Backups exported to your computer are ordinary files. They are not removed with the extension, so delete them yourself when you no longer need them.
