Capturing

Pages InnoShot cannot capture

Why Chrome blocks extensions on chrome:// pages, the Chrome Web Store and other special pages, how to allow file URLs, and what to do instead.

Updated

Chrome protects some pages from every extension, not just InnoShot. On these pages extensions are not allowed to run scripts, so InnoShot cannot measure, scroll or show its pickers there. InnoShot checks the page before it starts and shows a message explaining why, instead of failing silently.

Pages Chrome blocks

Page Examples
Chrome's own pages Settings, history, downloads and any other chrome:// address
The Chrome Web Store Extension and theme listings
Other extensions' pages Settings or other pages that belong to a different extension
View-source pages Any address that starts with view-source:
The New Tab page The page Chrome shows when you open a new tab
Chrome's PDF viewer PDF files opened in a Chrome tab
Local files file:// addresses, until you allow file access (see below)

On a few of these pages Chrome still allows a plain visible area capture. InnoShot attempts it only where Chrome permits. Full page, selected area, element and scrollable container capture all need to run on the page, so they stay unavailable.

Allow access to local files

To capture HTML files opened from your computer (addresses that start with file://), turn on file access for InnoShot:

  1. Type chrome://extensions in the address bar and press Enter.
  2. Find InnoShot and click Details.
  3. Turn on Allow access to file URLs.
  4. Go back to the local file's tab, reload it, and capture as usual.

This setting applies only to InnoShot, and you can turn it off again at any time.

Cross-origin iframes

Many pages embed content from other sites in frames, such as video players, maps and payment forms. These frames are not blocked from captures: their pixels appear in visible area, full page and selected area captures like everything else. However, the element picker and scrollable container capture cannot reach inside them, so you cannot pick an element or scroll a container that lives in such a frame.

Pages that change while scrolling

Some pages can be captured but look different while InnoShot scrolls them, such as pages with parallax effects, scroll-triggered animations or virtualized lists that remove rows you have scrolled past. InnoShot has an option to pause animations during capture and tells you when the page height changed. See Full page capture for details.

Capturing a blocked page another way

For a page that no extension can reach, use your operating system's screenshot tool:

  • Windows: press Win+Shift+S to open Snipping Tool, then choose a rectangle, freeform, window or full-screen snip.
  • macOS: press Cmd+Shift+4 and drag an area, or press Cmd+Shift+5 to open the screenshot toolbar.

Neither tool captures beyond what is on screen, so for a long page you would need to take several shots.
