Export

Very large images

When an export goes beyond the browser's canvas limits, InnoShot offers numbered files, a scaled-down image or a PDF and never crops silently.

Updated

Very long full-page captures can produce images larger than Chrome can draw in one piece. InnoShot handles this openly. It tells you, and offers ways to export everything, rather than quietly cutting off the bottom of the page.

Why there is a limit

Chrome draws images on a canvas, and a canvas has a maximum size, both for the length of each side and for the total number of pixels. Chrome does not document exact figures, and going past the limit can fail without any error, leaving a blank image. So InnoShot measures the limit in your browser at runtime instead of assuming a number.

High-density displays reach the limit sooner. On a display with scaling above 100%, every pixel of page width becomes more than one pixel in the image, so a long page adds up quickly.

How InnoShot stores long captures

Captures are stored as segments, each within the measured limit. The editor draws the segments together, so you see and edit one continuous image. You only meet the limit when an export would need a single image larger than the browser can draw.

Your options

When an export would be too large, InnoShot offers three choices:

Option What you get Best for
Split into numbered files Several images, numbered in order, that together cover the whole capture Keeping full resolution, for example for design review
Scale down One image, reduced until it fits A single overview where fine detail matters less
PDF A multi-page document at a readable size Articles, documentation and anything people will read or print

Whichever you pick, InnoShot never crops your image silently to make it fit.

Tips

  • Lower the export scale. Exporting at a larger scale multiplies the pixel count, and that is often what pushes an image over the limit.
  • Use PDF for documents. Long, text-heavy pages read better as pages than as one very tall image.
  • Export only what you need. Crop in the editor, or export a selected region, when you only need part of a long capture.
  • Capture less. A selected area capture of the relevant section avoids the problem at the source.

Maximum capture height

Separately from canvas limits, full-page capture stops at a maximum capture height, 40,000 CSS pixels by default, so pages that keep loading more content as you scroll cannot run forever. When that happens, the editor tells you, so you always know whether you have the whole page.
