Export
Export formats
Choose between PNG, JPEG, WebP and SVG in InnoShot, and set quality, scale, transparency and the file name before you export a screenshot.
Updated
InnoShot exports your edited screenshot as PNG, JPEG, WebP, SVG or PDF. This article covers the image formats; PDF has its own article. Everything is encoded in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
Which format to use
| Format | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Interface screenshots, text and sharp edges | Lossless, so files are larger |
| JPEG | Photo-heavy captures where small files matter | Lossy and no transparency |
| WebP | Web pages and docs where small files matter | Some older software does not open it |
| SVG | Images you want to keep editing in a vector tool | Annotations are vectors; the screenshot is a flattened raster |
If in doubt, choose PNG. Text and interface edges stay sharp, and it opens almost everywhere.
SVG keeps arrows, shapes and text as vectors that stay sharp at any zoom, laid over a flattened raster of the screenshot and its effects. The original source image is never embedded, so redactions stay in place.
Export settings
Quality
JPEG and WebP have a quality setting. Lower quality gives smaller files but can add smudging around text and sharp edges. PNG is lossless, so there is no quality trade-off to make.
Scale
Scale exports the image larger or smaller than its current size. Scaling down is a quick way to reduce file size. Scaling up makes annotations crisper on high-density displays, but it cannot add detail the capture did not have. The export shows the resulting dimensions in pixels.
Transparency
PNG and WebP can keep transparent areas, such as a transparent background around a screenshot with rounded corners. JPEG cannot store transparency.
File name
Name the file before you save it. The suggested name follows the filename pattern in Settings, and you can change it for any single export.
Size estimate
InnoShot estimates the file size as you change settings, so you can see the effect of a lower quality or a smaller scale before saving. It is an estimate, and the final file can differ slightly.
Presets
Export presets store a combination of export settings, such as format, quality and scale. Use a built-in preset, adjust it, or save your own for a destination you export to often.
Export part of an image
You do not have to export everything:
- Selected region: export one area of the canvas, for example a single section of a full-page capture.
- Selected layers: export only the layers you have selected.
Where files go
Exports are saved through Chrome's normal download handling. Files land in your downloads folder, or Chrome asks where to save them if you have turned that on in Chrome's settings.
Good to know
- Redactions are flattened into every export format, including the raster part of SVG.
- When an image is too large for the browser to draw in one piece, InnoShot offers to split it, scale it down or export a PDF instead of cropping it.
- To paste an image instead of saving a file, use copy to clipboard.
