PDF export

Export screenshots as PDF in InnoShot with fit, original, A4 or Letter pages, orientation, margins, header and footer text and multi-page captures.

Updated

PDF is an easy way to share a long capture as a document. It opens in any PDF reader, prints well and keeps tall pages readable. InnoShot writes the PDF itself, inside your browser, without uploading anything.

Export a PDF

  1. Open the screenshot in the editor.
  2. Use the export control in the top bar and choose PDF as the format.
  3. Choose a page size, an orientation and margins.
  4. Add header or footer text if you want it.
  5. Choose how the image is compressed, then save.

Page size

Option What it is for
Fit The page takes the shape of your image instead of a paper size
Original size The image keeps its original dimensions instead of being scaled to paper
A4 Standard A4 paper, used in most countries
Letter US Letter paper, used mainly in the United States and Canada

As a rule of thumb, choose Fit or Original size when the PDF will mostly be read on screen, and A4 or Letter when someone may print it.

Orientation and margins

Portrait suits tall content such as articles, documentation and forms. Landscape suits wide content such as dashboards, spreadsheets and timelines.

Margins add white space around the image on each page. They help when the PDF is printed, and they leave room for header and footer text.

Long captures become several pages

When an image is taller than one page, InnoShot spreads it across as many pages as it needs at a readable size. It does not shrink the whole capture onto a single page where the text would be too small to read. That makes PDF a good choice for full-page captures of articles, help pages and long forms.

You can add short text at the top or bottom of the pages, for example a title, the name of the site you captured, or a date. Keep it brief so it does not crowd the image.

Image compression

The image inside the PDF can be stored in one of two ways:

Option Result Use it when
JPEG Smaller files, with a slight loss of detail The PDF will be emailed or the capture is photo-heavy
Lossless Exact pixels, with larger files The capture is mostly text and interface, or will be zoomed and printed

Good to know

  • Redactions are flattened into the image on every page.
  • If the PDF looks small when you open it, the usual cause is a wide image on a portrait page. Switch to landscape or Fit.
  • When an image is too large to export as a single picture, PDF is one of the options InnoShot offers.
